Mrs. Ames has been teaching social studies at Pilgrim High School since 2018. Before teaching at Pilgrim, she taught at Aldrich Middle School from 2000 to 2016 and Vets Middle School from 2016 to 2018. As of 2026, she has been a teacher for 26 years. As a student, she attended Ponagansett High School and Rhode Island College.
Mrs. Ames currently teaches World History, Anthropology, and Geography. However, she used to teach [classes]. She currently teaches in room 632 at Pilgrim. Additionally, Mrs. Ames has been the class advisor of the class of 2027 (the students who will graduate in 2027), was the class advisor of the class of 2023, and will probably be the class advisor of another class at Pilgrim at some point in the near future.
Mrs. Ames has enjoyed her experience teaching at Pilgrim. Her favorite thing about teaching at Pilgrim is the students. Moreover, after having taught at middle schools, which school only three grades and where students from only one grade are in each course, she likes "being involved with people for more than just a year at a time. I like having four years and watching people grow and change and, oh... hopefully mature."
Fun Fact: Mrs. Ames likes making Christmas crafts.
Mr. Michael Costello started teaching social studies at Pilgrim High School in the 1987-1988 school year, his first year of teaching, before teaching at Gorton Junior High School from 1988 to 1990, teaching at Warwick Vets High School from 1990 to 2016, and returning to Pilgrim in 2016, after Vets was made a middle school. As of 2026, he has been a teacher for 39 years. As a student, he attended Pilgrim High School and Providence College.
Mr. Costello currently teaches World History, American Civics, American Legal, Sociology, Western Civilization Honors, and AP European History at Pilgrim. However, he used to teach U.S. History, Economics, Psychology, Contemporary Issues, and AP United States Government and Politics. He currently teaches in room 605 at Pilgrim, which was actually his homeroom for two years when he attended Pilgrim as a student! Additionally, Mr. Costello has been the faculty advisor of yours truly, the Pilgrim-History Club, since its founding in May 2025. He also coached Mock Trial during the 1987-1988 school year and used to coach Boys' and Girls' Tennis.
Mr. Costello has enjoyed his experience teaching at Pilgrim, stating that it's rewarding and that "[c]oming back to Pilgrim was like coming home." He also enjoyed his experience as a student at Pilgrim, especially during his junior and senior years, when he was president of the student council and did the morning announcements. In fact, he now empathizes greatly with students who do the announcements, as it's certainly not the easiest of jobs: "You're reading the list of names, and you mispronounce a name, and somebody's gonna yack at you during the day and say, 'You mispronounced my name,' and it's like, 'Sorry!'"
Fun Fact: Mr. Costello is an army brat. His father was in the army, and he and his brothers were all born on different military bases, with Mr. Costello (the one who we know) being born on Fort Dix, New Jersey.
Mr. Andrew Oaklund started teaching social studies at Pilgrim High School in 2016, before leaving to teach at Tollgate High School and returning to Pilgrim in 2022. As of 2026, he has been a teacher for 10 years. As a student, he attended North Kingstown High School and the University of Rhode Island.
Mr. Oaklund currently teaches World History, Eastern Civilization (Honors and non-Honors), and AP United States Government and Politics. However, he used to teach U.S. History, American Civics, Contemporary Issues, and Sociology. He currently teaches in room 601 at Pilgrim. Additionally, he has been the faculty advisor of Pilgrim's Model Legislature Club since 2025.
Mr. Oakland has enjoyed his experience teaching at Pilgrim, stating that he enjoys the presence of the students and his colleagues, and that, in general, he enjoys "mentoring young people."
Fun Fact: Mr. Oaklund can speak Arabic.
